I have been associated with  MIRO for over ten years, initially as an observer in two of their managed programmes at NPL and then as a member of the Research Advisory Panel. In 1998 we were successful in securing ENTRUST funding for a major project on alternative landfill liner construction which was managed by MIRO. I have been a MIRO contractor on several projects since then and have recently taken a more active role in marketing and research management.


MIRO is a contract research organisation, representing the interests of its member companies. It builds consortia of organisations who share an interest in a common problems and wish to share the costs and benefits of finding a solution. The minerals industry is a very broad field and this is reflected in the nature and scope of MIRO projects, which range from developing cutting edge technology to enhancing well established industrial practice. The portfolio spans a wide range of site, field, laboratory and knowledge-based projects and MIRO contributes to working groups in other areas such as networks, policy development, standards and codes of practice. A presentation to the Society of Mining Professors gives a good overview of the organisation

Current projects are listed  on the MIRO website along with active proposals and inquiries, however the latter are only available to MIRO members. in addition to its own projects, MIRO participates in others and is a supporter of the EPSRC network MiMeMiP to which I contribute.
